Charles and Ray Eames were American artists, designers and directors. The couple, who married in 1941, became a very influential design duo of the last century , and are widely recognized for their contribution to the design of modern furniture. The chairs fiber glass Eames came on the market in 1950, after they were entered into a low-cost furniture competition held in New York Museum of Modern Art in 1948. After the Second World war, there was a desperate need for low-cost housing and furniture, and Charles and Ray worked in collaboration with Zenith Plastics to produce a chair that was affordable and could fit in small houses. The use of reinforced-plastic fiberglass meant the chair could be mass produced at a relatively low cost, but because of environmental concerns, fiberglass production was abandoned and today they are made polypropylene and produced by Herman Miller and Vitra.
