Teaming with Knoll
Florence Knoll (born Schust), which Saarinen had befriended at Cranbrook, married Hans Knoll and founded the company Knoll Associates furniture. She asked Saarinen to design for them, and later admitted, "We just begged him. We were so young and enthusiastic that he finally gave in and worked with us.

the dream of a chair cocooning
Florence asked Saarinen to design a seat that oozed comfort. I want a chair that is like a basket cushions to curl up and read a book, she said.
In response, Saarinen developed a chair with a strangely different form which is now known for its comfort. Its name alludes to the womb of a mother, and is designed to bring calm and comfort of a fetus can feel those sitting inside.

inspiration
in 1940, Eero Saarinen and Charles Eames had worked together and won the New York Museum of Modern Art "Organic design furniture house of the competition, in which they molded laminated wood. This inspired the design of the Womb chair.
While looking for a carpenter to put the chair into production, Saarinen found a shipbuilder, called Winter, who worked mainly in fiberglass. Fiberglass is much more easily molded than laminate wood, and turned out to be the ideal material for the Womb chair.

the comfort factor
what was less easy than molding the fiberglass hull was ensuring that it remained attached to the base without compromising comfort. After a few attempts, however, has been achieved. A foam coating, two cushions loose and subtle curves maintain the comfort of the chair, which allows multiple sitting positions.

Naturally organic
texture carpet, wooden stools and wicker baskets work wonderfully with the Womb chair in this room. They come together to create a space that has depth and interest, but subtly discreet and elegant. The natural aesthetic of the room is picked up perfectly in the curves of the chair, as if returning to the womb of Mother Nature.
